Are the Brits Doing it Better?

While writing the last post, I came across this video of the band Muse rocking out in a sold out Wembley Stadium. The fans are all singing the lyrics, a Cirque du Soleil balloon girl flies through the air, and did I mention that they sold out Wembley? So, I thought to myself that the only time concerts get big-big in the US anymore is if Dave Matthews writes an album about how sex makes him feel sexy or if Justin Timberlake goes anywhere in pubic, really. (maaan crush)

Are we doing it wrong in the US? Why aren't 210,000 seat venues selling out to more musical acts? Are we giving too much weight to 50 cent albums that make our little brother's used Mitsubishi's speaker system really 'bump?' I mean, most people in the US haven't even heard of Muse, and let me tell you...they are a SOLID band with an ugly amount of talent. What are your thoughts on the subject?

New Genre: Eerily Beautiful Gentle Yet Really Hard Rock

Many modern rock bands are coming out with these ballad-esque anthem songs that seem to give their albums a much deeper feel. These songs are filled with meaningful, heartbreaking lyrics along with airy, lucid sounding guitar lines. The drums get your head going, but the tone of the song isn't 'head-bobby,' per se. It's like music you'd hear in the park, yet your Yanni-loving dad would still hate it. The mixed feelings one gets from listening to these songs results in only one thing: obnoxiously loud vociferating of the lyrics while stuck in traffic during a drive home from a typically shitty office day. I call this genre, "Eerily Beautiful Gentle Yet Really Hard Rock."

Two songs that define the new genre I have registered with the AKC:
- A Perfect Circle - The Noose
- The Dear Hunter - Red Hands

Other Gems:
- Muse - Butterflies and Hurricanes
- Blindside - Shekina
- Mew - Why Are You Looking Grave?
- The Mars Volta - Televators

Mix One Part Supple Gwen-Lover with One Part Ibiza Sunset:

blog42 Mix One Part Supple Gwen Lover with One Part Ibiza Sunset:and you get Cafe Del Mar's remix of Bush - Letting The Cables Sleep.

I first heard the remix of this song whilst chilling on Valentine's Day with the future Mrs. at a riverside lounge in downtown Miami, called Big Fish. We were engulfing bottles of red wine and subliminally channeling the channel-swimming fish to jump out of the calm river and do a quick little sky flicker. I caught myself singing to the background music, like one does when a song like Supertramp's, 'The Logical Song' is playing in an elevator...and realized I knew all the words. It was an unusual feeling and it took me a second to realize why I knew this song like the way one knows how to type their facebook password faster than they can their last name.

Sure enough, memories of my 10th grade mixed CD hobby resurfaced, and I recalled listening to 'Letting The Cables Sleep'' on loop, whether it be in the bathtub, in my Walkman-to-tape-deck car hookup or while...appropriately enough...watching the sun set into the horizon.

And the remix does it justice. It is smooth, keeps the vocals in the forefront, and modernizes a passionate alternarock song. Turn this song up (not too loud) at your local tea shop or even ipod it up on the beach. But you don't have to take myyyy word for it.

Boo Doo Beoo!

Noel Gallagher has a gun and he is drunk

blog41 Noel Gallagher has a gun and he is drunk
“Noel Gallagher has taken up a new hobby – shooting.
The Oasis star was introduced to the country pursuit while in Los Angeles - where he is recording the band's new album with brother Liam - and has been stocking up an arsenal of various firearms to take back to the UK.
Kasabian singer Tom Meighan, who is close friends with the guitarist, said: "Noel sent me a text about going shooting in America, and about how scared he was of shooting himself. "He was going to get some guns and rifles I think.”

The impending economy crisis… Icecaps melting... The gray hair that keeps popping up on my head… These are all catastrophic issues facing our world today.
All of which are disastrous results of nature that we must face on a day-to-day basis. So what do have to wake up to next?

Noel Gallagher of Oasis likes guns.

Board up the children or run for the hills.

It is the end of days.

Note – Gnarls Barkley may cause seizures

blog40 Note – Gnarls Barkley may cause seizures
“Gnarls Barkley's new video may make some people crazy. And that's why you won't be seeing it on MTV.The clip for the Grammy-winning duo's "Run," which features a cameo by Justin Timberlake, has been kept out of rotation on the music channel after failing the Harding Test. The test monitors strobe effects in video content to make sure the images don't set off seizures, à la the infamous Pokémon scare of 1997.Danger Mouse, one half of the hip-hop, soul duo, told Billboard that he and rapper-vocalist Cee-Lo Green hoped to retool the video and get it on air as soon as possible.”

Justin Timberlake, Pokemon seizures, oh my! I’m probably the first human being to ever write that down on the internet…which is nice. You have to love that the duo of Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse are so focused on delivering an amazing video for you, that they’ll induce seizures to make sure.

Craaaaaaaaazy….

This celeb endorsement takes the cake….

blog39 This celeb endorsement takes the cake….
“Stones guitarist Keith Richards is the new face of Louis Vuitton.

The guitarist is seen posing in a New York City hotel room with a guitar (Gibson ES-335 if you must know) on his lap, it's case on the bed next to him, skull cloths draped over the lampshade and even a skull on the bedside table.”

**WARNING**

Seeing this ad in person might make your testicles shrink and you might even have the sudden urge to wax your chest. I mean, one of rock’s greatest legends doing his FIRST endorsement….for Louis Vuitton bags??? Fine, you get some cool points back for donating your fee to Climate Project, but couldn’t you endorse a product worthy of your name? Like 190-proof Everclear or something? How about endorsing that life-prolonging/std-cleansing gas chamber you’ve been using for the past 30 years??

…or maybe you could just tell us where to find that chamber? Seriously, this itch won’t go away Keith.

March 11th, 2008 – Happy 311 Day!

blog38 March 11th, 2008 Happy 311 Day!
Happy 311 Day everybody! Today is the day to feel so good wearing your favorite 311 shirt, turn up some 'Don't Let Me Down' on the way to work, and let everybody in your world know that it's time to throw dowwwwwwn.

Starting in 2000, 311 began celebrating "their holiday" of 311 Day, held on March 11 (3/11). Every other year the band and thousands of their most loyal fans gather to New Orleans and celebrate with an extended concert. The sets have gotten longer every year; In 2000 they played 47 songs and in 2002 59 songs were played. In 2004 311 played 68 songs in 5 hours (I was there!) In 2006, the concert was held at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, Tennessee due to complications in New Orleans from Hurricane Katrina. The band played only 65 of the planned 69 songs because of a strict midnight curfew. A 2 hour recording of the show aired on HDTV on December 10. This year's 311 Day will be held in the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Louisiana. Are you going?
